• 4.0 out of 5 stars from Jonesy -- A fun manor house mystery. : What I liked: The switch in POV from chapter to chapter works in this case. We get to know the characters, how they feel about the situation they have been thrown into and the plot progresses at a good pace. The setting was well rendered, with enough description to set the tone of the book without overwhelming the story. The paranormal element was very much a part of the story but done with a light hand. There was enough humor tucked into the dialog and thoughts of the characters to lightened the mood occasionally. It is fun to run into a sentence that surprises me into a smile. The supporting characters were given sufficient depth to keep my interest, but in a story of this nature one cannot expect a great deal of character development. They are there to create and solve the puzzle and they served their purpose. I enjoyed discovering that the female lead had a good brain, was respected for her intelligence and was very capable of using the pistol she carried in her purse. Things that had to be taken with a gain of salt? The situation was contrived and not realistic, and the scene where all is revealed could be rewritten to feel a bit less that the game Clue. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Cathy G. Cole -- Wonderful setting! : As a teenager, I loved reading Gothic suspense novels. I couldn't get enough of the creepy old houses, atmospheric settings, and (often) searches for treasure. W.C. Ryan's A House of Ghosts fits into the Gothic suspense genre beautifully. Blackwater Abbey is hundreds of years old, the site of an ancient monastery, and it is absolutely filled with secret doors, rooms, and passageways. I wish the place were real so I could wander around it myself. The atmosphere was tense, and when the storm descended, it added to the frayed nerves of the people in the house: "It seemed as though the house and the wind were having a conversation" (and it wasn't a good one). • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Godzillahelper -- Pleasant Surprise : This novel was a fairly light read...pleasant surprise! I was disappointed that I couldn’t find more books from this author. I loved the setting—during WWI, and appreciated the many details that helped me to learn more about the war. It had a large element in it, but it was not so far-fetched that it was unbelievable, my favorite! The story was focused on the mystery at hand which gave me enough info to make and adjust my whodunnit predictions, but I was wrong at the end. It was steadily entertaining and I looked forward to reading it each time I had to put it down. It had strong, smart male AND female characters, a little two-dimensional, but then , this book wasn’t heavy so that worked just fine. I loved that it had a touch of romance, but it didn’t dominate the theme or make you want to smack a pining woman or man. I’m sincerely looking forward to more by this author, esp. in historic settings or times. I’d even love a continuation of adventures by the characters in this book! Set in 1917 and with a story line focused on wartime espionage, there are shades of John Buchan, while the country house murder mystery element, set on a remote island, has the feel of one of the darker Agatha Christies. Added to this, though, is a sprinkling of the supernatural: a heroine who can not only see ghosts but also has visions of the future which she accesses through a mysterious mirror, and plot involving mediums, seances and shellshocked soldiers. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Char Louise -- An espionage thriller, not a chilling ghost story : This book wasn’t quite what I expected. I was hoping for a creepy ghost story/supernatural thriller, something along the lines of The Silent Companions or The Woman in Black, and the setting certainly hinted at that: an ancient abbey on a remote island, complete with the skulls of deceased monks in the cellar. But it was actually more of a WW1 espionage thriller, which isn’t really my thing. It took me a while to get into the book; I’d say I was at around 35% before I felt any strong interest, but after that I was intrigued by the séance, the attack on Lady Highmount and the intruder. One of my interests is the nature of consciousness and the afterlife, so the theories of Doctor Reid about that were fascinating. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 19, 2018 )
• 2.0 out of 5 stars from Christine Goodier -- Not what you think it is! : I was looking for a nice creepy read as the nights draw in and reading the blurb this seemed to fit the bill. I was almost instantly disappointed. There was no spookiness whatsoever because there was no supernatural tension at all. Hitchcock knew that to keep people on the edge of their seats you have to hint at things- catch them in the corner of your eye- not show the audience everything all at once. Having said that I decided to read on and came to the conclusion that it is actually a sort of throwback to Agatha Christie and lots of people seem to have enjoyed it, I guess because of that? But personally, if I'd known that I wouldn't have bought it simply because its not my thing. Its not without merit- its just not what it claimed to be, and the villains were very obvious too. Marks -- Doesn't live up to the hype : I was surprisingly disappointed with this - I mean the cover of the book, all matt black and shiny gold is most inviting, but not, I fear, once you get inside. For a start I don't know why it's called A House of Ghosts, since the ghosts don't appear to have any interaction with the characters, or any impression on the story. They're simply there. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Adrian Drew -- An odd mix! : Well a lot of people seemed to have enjoyed this but I gave up after 50 pages. It’s a strange mixture of John Buchan and The Sixth Sense that didn’t work for me at all. The “magic mirror” was just plain daft, and the ghostly appearances tedious and distracting. Despite the location it strangely seemed to lack any real atmosphere. Still it has a beautifully designed cover! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 25, 2018 )
